How far is a village from spawn?

You punch a tree and wonder where the nearest town is. I tested 64 fresh Java worlds. In the middle, the nearest village sat about 500 blocks from spawn. About 9 in 10 worlds had one inside 1,000 blocks.

About 9 in 10 worlds had a village that close. All 64 were inside 2,000.

What this is.

A Java playtest. I started 64 Survival worlds and asked the game where the nearest village sat from world spawn.

Why it matters.

Early game is a walk. If the nearest town is a few hundred blocks away, that is a short hike, not a lost-in-the-wilderness story.

Most towns sat a few hundred blocks out

You spawn on grass. The sun is up. You punch a tree, craft a crafting table, and pick a direction. The question is simple: how far until houses, beds, and a farmer?

I tested that in Java 1.21.8 across 64 fresh worlds. Most of those worlds piled up between 250 and 500 blocks. The closest town sat about 97 blocks away. The farthest town in this test was still only about 1,540.

A 500-block walk is a couple of minutes

Minecraft’s normal walk is about 4.3 blocks a second. At that pace, 500 blocks is roughly two minutes. A 1,000-block walk is closer to four. That is a straight line on the map. I did not walk the route in-game. Hills, rivers, and lakes can make the real hike longer.

You can still get unlucky and draw the 1,500-block world. That long hike is the rare one, not the usual one.

Plains villages were the nearest town most often (24 of 64 worlds). Savanna and taiga showed up next. Desert and snowy were rarer as the closest hit. That is “what sat nearest,” not a claim that plains towns are always common.

Takeaway.

Pick a direction and walk. In these worlds, a town was usually a short hike, not a 10,000-block pilgrimage. Hills and water can stretch the real path. The map line is still the right first guess.

Java 1.21.8 only. Sixty-four worlds, not “every Minecraft seed.” Bedrock can place towns differently. The game’s village search does not tell live villages from abandoned ones. A real walk can be longer than the straight-line number if you path around water. Full table under the numbers.
