Wow #1 · Wiki peak layers
Y=−59 / −58
Deepslate diamond ore shows up most often here (wiki).
Wow #2 · Old habit
Y=11
Classic pre–Caves & Cliffs habit. Wrong for modern worlds.
Where diamond ore is supposed to spawn in modern Overworld generation, from the public wiki tables. For counted ore in real chunks, see my 1,024-chunk Java dig.
Digging at Y=11 in a new world wastes time. The deep deepslate band is where the peaks live now.
1. The diamond ore batches
Diamond ore shows up in four ore-feature batches in the Overworld:
| Batch | Y range | Air exposure rule |
|---|---|---|
| 7 blobs of 1–5 / chunk | Y=16 → −63 | 50% skip if next to air |
| 1 blob of 1–23 every 1/9 chunks | Y=16 → −63 | 70% skip if next to air |
| 4 blobs of 1–10 / chunk | Y=16 → −63 | Never if next to air |
| 2 blobs of 1–10 / chunk | Y=−4 → −63 | 50% skip if next to air |

Where players aim vs the old myth
Illustration only — relative bars (20 vs 100), not counted ore per chunk. Peak layers come from the wiki, not my census.
| Label | Value |
|---|---|
| Old habit Y=11 | 20 |
| Modern peak Y=−59/−58 | 100 |
2. Where to dig in Survival
A common habit matches the deepslate peak: strip or branch around Y=−59 to −54. Use an iron+ pick. Light the tunnel. Watch for lava.
Fortune multiplies drops. It does not change where ore spawns.
Skip Y=11 in modern worlds. Aim for deep deepslate around the wiki peaks Y=−58 / −59, or a short strip about −59 to −54.
Numbers come from the wiki’s Diamond Ore page as of 2026-08-12. Experimental worldgen or a future rewrite can nudge peaks. Pin the answer to your version. This FAQ page does not recount ore in fresh chunks; the companion census does.

How I calculated it
Parsed Minecraft Wiki Diamond Ore natural-generation section (lock 2026-08-12). Peak claim quoted from wiki (“most commonly found at Y=−58 and Y=−59”). What I added: plain dig-band framing for players, and a measured Java census of 1,024 chunks — diamond chunk census — so the FAQ is not wiki-only.
