Do Minecraft’s patch notes look as big as the updates feel?

A new Minecraft update drops and you feel it in the world: a new mob, a new block, a bug that finally dies. I counted the written change lists instead. Java has hundreds of public notes since the late 2010s. Bedrock’s public list in my numbers is thinner.

Java notes counted

403

Public Java patch-note cards in the numbers I saved.

Bedrock notes counted

49

Thinner public list in the same save. Not proof Bedrock changes less.

What this is.

A count of public patch-note cards, the written change lists Mojang posted, and how often those notes went out. It is not a score of how much fun shipped in the world.

Why it matters.

Think of patch notes as the game’s running change list. A quiet-feeling year still prints a lot of paper if the team ships snapshots and hotfixes in public.

Java prints a note pile, not one summer essay

A new update drops and you feel it in the world: a new mob, a new block, a bug that finally dies. I wanted to know whether the written change lists look as big as that feeling, so I counted the public Java patch-note cards.

There are 403 of them, not one big essay each summer. Recent full years land around 50–67 Java notes each. 2025 is the busiest full year in that pile, with 67 cards. That is more than one public Java note a week, on average, in a busy year.

The pile did not always look like that. 2018 and 2019 barely show up (1 and 3 cards). Then 2020 jumps to 53, and every full year after that stays in the 50s and 60s. 2026 is only a partial year in my save, so that bar is not a finished year yet.

Java patch-note cards per year

Counted from the official Java notes index I saved. 2026 is a partial year.

A year with 60 notes is not “60 new biomes.” Some cards are big seasonal drops. Others are tiny fixes. The chart only answers how often Mojang posted a public Java note.

Bedrock’s public list is thinner

My Bedrock note index holds 49 cards spanning mainly 2021–2023 in this extract. That does not mean “Bedrock barely updates.” It means this particular public list is thinner, and shaped differently, than the Java note dump.

Compare editions carefully. A missing card on this list is not proof that phones and consoles sat still. It is proof that the public note pile I saved for Bedrock is smaller.

Takeaway.

Java’s public note pile is huge, and Bedrock’s public list in my numbers is thinner. Neither count equals how big the update felt in the world.

How I calculated it

Official Java and Bedrock patch-notes indexes I saved: 403 Java notes, 49 Bedrock notes. Year from the date on each note. Peak full years for Java: 2025 had 67.

Honest limits.

One note is not one feature. Some cards are big seasonal drops; others are tiny fixes. Counts measure how often public notes went out. Not how much fun shipped.
