First public build
May 17, 2009
Cave Game / early public Minecraft (classic history).
Full Java release
Nov 18, 2011
Version 1.0: the “left beta” day.
Two start dates people mix up, plus how many finished Java releases followed. I am not picking a “real” birthday. I am showing which date you are using when you say how old Minecraft is.
Ask “how old is Minecraft?” and you need to pick a start date. First public builds, or Java 1.0? Both work, as long as you say which.
The date most people mean is 2011
You load a world. The sun is up. Grass, dirt, a wooden pickaxe. Minecraft feels like it has always been here.
The date people usually mean is November 18, 2011. That is when Java Edition shipped version 1.0, the “full game” after years of beta. If a friend says Minecraft came out in 2011, they are talking about that night.
There is an earlier date too. The first public builds went out in 2009. If you started in a browser or in those early downloads, that is your start date. Both answers work. You just have to say which one you mean.
If someone says “Minecraft is 15 years old,” ask which start date they used.
The game never stopped shipping drafts
Version 1.0 was not the last box. Java kept putting out finished releases, and it kept putting out test builds in between.
My Java launcher list shows 742 experimental snapshots next to those 102 finished releases. That’s roughly seven tests for every polished version (Do players see the Minecraft update, or the test pile behind it?).
So “when did it come out?” is one question. “When did this version come out?” is a different one, because the list never really stopped growing.
How “old” is that in real years?
From Java 1.0 night (November 18, 2011) to the newest finished entry in my 2026 numbers is about 15 years. From first public builds in 2009 is longer still.
Bedrock, the edition on phones, consoles, and Windows, has its own timeline. Do not mix those dates into the Java 1.0 story without saying so.
If you need one date, use November 18, 2011 for Java 1.0. If you mean the first public builds, use 2009. Say which one you mean.

How I calculated it
Narrative dates: established public Minecraft history (2009 public builds; 2011-11-18 Java 1.0). Version counts: Mojang’s public Java list from August 2026 — 102 finished releases, 742 snapshots, 905 total rows. Search demand: Ahrefs question list, “when did minecraft come out” about 37k monthly searches.
Classic and alpha public dates follow the usual Minecraft history (wiki and Mojang timelines). My version counts come from the public Java launcher list. They do not measure how popular any year was.
