2009 or 2011: When did Minecraft actually come out?

People search this about 37,000 times a month. First public build: 2009. The full Java “1.0” release most people mean: November 18, 2011.

Wow #1 · First public build

May 17, 2009

Cave Game / early public Minecraft (classic history).

Wow #2 · Full Java release

Nov 18, 2011

Version 1.0: the “left beta” day.

What this is.

Two start dates people mix up, plus how many finished Java releases followed.

Why it matters.

Ask “how old is Minecraft?” and you need to pick a start date. First public builds, or Java 1.0? Both work, as long as you say which.

1. Three dates worth knowing

2009First public builds / classic era begins
2011Java 1.0 “full game” release (Nov 18)
2014Microsoft acquires Mojang (company story)
102Finished Java releases I counted in the public launcher list

If someone says “Minecraft is 15 years old,” ask which start date they used.

2. The game never stopped shipping drafts

My Java launcher list shows 742 experimental snapshots next to those 102 finished releases. That’s roughly seven tests for every polished version (Do players see the Minecraft update, or the test pile behind it?).

3. How “old” is that in real years?

From Java 1.0 night (November 18, 2011) to the newest finished entry in my 2026 numbers is about 15 years. From first public builds in 2009 is longer still.

Takeaway.

2009 = first public builds. Nov 18, 2011 = Java 1.0. Say which one you mean.

How I calculated it

Narrative dates: established public Minecraft history (2009 public builds; 2011-11-18 Java 1.0). Counts: mojang_versions.csv. 102 release, 742 snapshot, 905 total rows (saved 2026-08). Search demand: Ahrefs questions slice / keyword map, “when did minecraft come out” ~37k monthly volume.

Honest limits.

Classic and alpha public dates follow the usual Minecraft history (wiki and Mojang timelines). My version counts come from the public Java launcher list. They do not measure how popular any year was.
