1. What does “8:1” mean in the game?
One Nether block sideways equals eight Overworld blocks.
Players say “8:1” because a short Nether walk covers a long Overworld trip.

2. How do portals pick a match?
Step through a portal. The game multiplies or divides X and Z by 8. Then it looks for an active portal nearby. If it finds none, it builds one.
That’s why a “wrong” portal can appear. Another portal was closer to the scaled spot than the one you meant.
Use the Nether as a shortcut: 1 block there ≈ 8 Overworld blocks sideways. Aim portals with ÷8 on X and Z. Do not blindly ÷8 on height.
This page sticks to the public coordinate scale, not every linking bug in the wild. Bedrock and Java share the 8∶1 idea. Search range and edge cases can still differ. Near world borders, height can get clamped.
