The public day–night clock: how long a Minecraft day lasts, and how that time splits into day, night, sunrise, and sunset.
If you budget “half the day is dark,” you overshoot. Night is shorter than day, and the orange edges are only about a minute total.
1. The 20-minute answer
A full daylight cycle is 20 minutes of real time. That is 24,000 game ticks when the game keeps up at 20 ticks per second (ticks = the game’s tiny time steps).
Day and night are not a clean 50/50 split.
Pure daytime is 10 minutes. Night is 8 minutes 20 seconds. Sunrise and sunset each last 50 seconds (1,000 ticks).
Plan a night of mining or a bed run with that split in mind, not a half-and-half clock.
A real day is 1,440 minutes. A Minecraft day is 20 minutes. 1,440 ÷ 20 = 72. Play one real hour → 3 day–night cycles. Leave the world running for 24 real hours → 72 complete day–night cycles, if you never sleep.

Some host writeups call sunset and sunrise about 1.5 minutes each. The wiki’s phase boundaries are 1,000 ticks: 50 seconds each. I use the wiki for redstone and spawn math.
3. Minecraft vs real life
Same sky idea, different speed. In the loop below, 72 seconds = 1 Earth day. One anim second = 20 real minutes = 1 Minecraft day.
Each Minecraft cycle is a full 1-second center-line rise and set. Square sun, then square moon — not a blip. Over those same 72 seconds, Earth finishes one day. Minecraft finishes 72 day–night cycles.
The packing fact still holds beside that picture. 1 real hour = 3 Minecraft day–night cycles. 24 real hours = 72 full cycles (1,440 ÷ 20).
You get 72 full Minecraft day–night cycles. That assumes 20 ticks per second (TPS) and nobody sleeps nights away.

Rule: real minutes ÷ 20 = full Minecraft day–night cycles. That assumes 20 ticks per second (TPS) and nobody sleeps. Month = 30 days. Year uses an average calendar year (~365.24 days) so multi-year rows stay consistent.
