If your friends mix phones and PCs, who can join whom?

You are on a PC. Your friend is on a Switch. Whether you can join depends on which edition each of you is running, not on how close you are as friends. Mixed phones, consoles, and Windows? Put everyone on Bedrock . Everyone already on Java with mods? Stay on Java .

Bedrock

Phones, many consoles, and Windows Bedrock can play together when accounts allow it.

Vanilla Java ↔ Bedrock

No join button

There is no built-in “just join” path between Java and Bedrock. Bridges are extra community tools.

What this is.

A who-can-join-whom map for friend groups that mix devices. Account and online-subscription gates still apply on top.

Why it matters.

The wrong edition split means someone gets left in the lobby. Realms, the rented private worlds, also do not cross editions.

Bedrock can join Bedrock, and Java can join Java

You load the world and send a join invite. Your friend is on a Switch. You are on a PC. The invite only works if you are both on the same edition. Bedrock, the phone-and-console edition, can talk to other Bedrock devices. Java talks to Java. There is no built-in button that mixes the two.

Read the table as two separate games. Everyone on Bedrock can play together when accounts allow it. Java PC only joins other Java PCs unless someone adds a community bridge. “Bridge only” is extra software, not a vanilla join button.

What matters most (rough picture)

Most mixed friend groups belong on Bedrock. This pie is a sketch of typical friend groups, not a census of players. Java-only groups should stay on Java. Bridges are the leftover slice, not the default path.

Do Realms cross editions?

Java Realms and Bedrock Realms are separate subscriptions (Realms cost). Buying a Java Realm does not let a Switch friend in, and buying a Bedrock Realm does not let a Java-only friend in.

“Java & Bedrock for PC” is still two installs

A PC buy that says both still gives you two products. Saves do not auto-convert just because the listed price said “and.” Deep edition differences: Java vs Bedrock.

Takeaway.

If your friends mix phones, consoles, and Windows, put everyone on Bedrock. Vanilla Java and Bedrock do not share a built-in join button.

How I calculated it

Built as a literacy matrix from the edition split (Bedrock multi-device multiplayer vs Java PC culture) already documented on my editions paper and cross-play FAQ. No platform partnership census. Account/subscription gates are live-checked by players.

Honest limits.

Platform online subscriptions and Microsoft account linking still apply. Re-check your live store and account gates before you promise a friend they can join. Community bridges are advanced tools, not the vanilla path.
