Buying the wrong edition for your friend group wastes money. Worlds also do not auto-copy between Java and Bedrock.
Bedrock is for mixed devices, and Java is for PC mods
Two friends want to play in the same world: one is on a phone, and the other is on a Windows PC with a folder full of mods. Minecraft is not one install that covers both jobs. It is two editions with different homes.
Java is the older PC edition. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. People pick it for deep mod loaders and public test builds. Bedrock is the edition on Windows, consoles, and phones. People pick it so mixed devices can share a world, and so they can use Marketplace content.
A PC purchase that includes both still gives you two games. Saves sit in separate folders. Copying a world across editions is extra work, not an automatic gift.
Can friends on different devices play together?
Friends on Xbox, Switch, and phone can share Bedrock worlds when accounts and online subscriptions allow it. That is the vanilla “press multiplayer” path for mixed devices.
A friend who only owns Java cannot tap that same button. They need bridge tools (for example Geyser-style setups), which is not the built-in path. If everyone already lives on Java with mods, stay on Java. Do not split the group across editions and hope the join button appears.
Which edition has more players?
I do not have a solid public number for that. So I do not rank popularity here. I track catalogs, help notes, and download stores instead.
If your friends mix devices, use Bedrock. If you want deep mods on PC, use Java. A PC buy that includes both still keeps two separate world folders.
