1. Where do you find ancient debris?
Ancient debris is rare Nether ore that tries to hide from open air. On average, Y-level 16 has the most. Java can place up to two clusters per chunk (a thick band about Y=8–24, plus a thinner band up toward Y=119). Bedrock uses more clusters in similar height bands.

2. Why use a smithing table?
The smithing recipe needs a Netherite Upgrade template, any diamond tool or armor, and one ingot. Durability, enchantments, and custom names stay. A full tools-and-armor swap is 10 ingots on the wiki cost list, before leftover scrap for extras.
Dig near Y=16, craft ingots (4 scrap + 4 gold), then smith diamond over. Full tools and armor = 10 netherite ingots.
Peak height and recipe costs follow the public wiki. Worldgen can still swing how fast you find debris. Pin answers to your version. Templates and gold are separate costs on top of the 10-ingot count.
